As so many children head back to school, it seems so appropriate to celebrate Beverly Cleary and her much loved books that focused on the lives and emotions of everyday children.  Gwyneth Kelly from The New Republic wrote, "Cleary's enduring appeal is a testament to her skill in speaking directly to children."  Her first book featured character Henry Huggins, but not long after Ramona appeared and stole the show.  Besides Henry, some of her other beloved charactors included Ramona's sister Beezus; Ralph, the Mouse on the Motorcycle; and of course Ribsy.

As adults we know it's important for a child to see themselves in literature to inspire them to read and dream about who and what they can be.  Cleary found her way into writing about real children because of her own struggles with reading. It wasn't until she read a book about ordinary children and their adventures and struggles that she found her love of reading (and therefore writing). She knew that her writing must include humor and relatability which was underscored by a question from a child: "Where are the books about children like us?".  And so she wrote them, books about ordinary children doing ordinary things, helping to pave the way for books about other children, with different experiences and backgrounds and cultures.

So this month's color New Galoshes is a nod to Ramona in Ramona the Pest where the adventure of kindergarten begins!  Thank you Beverly Cleary for bringing us so many fun books to read!
