Sometimes the thought of knitting a sweater for the first time seems a bit daunting.  This class is designed to help you through the process of making your first sweater including sizing, swatching, keeping track of where you are, tips and tricks for following your pattern, plus all the techniques you'll need to complete a simple, top-down, bulky-weight sweater.  Instructor Kristina Truesdale has been knitting for over 37 years, has taught adults and children how to knit in formal and informal classes over the years and she loves to share the joy of knitting.

    Dates/Time:
    Saturdays, March 2, 9, 16 and 30 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm

    Duration:
4 classes, each class is 2 hours

    Skills Learned:
Learn to knit a top-down sweater from neckline to hem in the round.  The beauty of the top-down technique is that the sweater is virtually ready to wear when the knitting is complete – no seaming required! This pattern is a loose-fitting, raglan-style that features a turtleneck and modern shaping.  Stop by the shop to see our sample or explore on Ravelry:  Turtle Dove.

In this class you will learn how to size a sweater based on your swatch and your desired fit, swatch in the round, use short-row shaping, read a pattern and keep track of where you are.  We will discuss ease and how that affects the size you choose.  We will be making the twisted rib split hem in this class, but you can use the optional rolled hem.

There will be homework prior to class (see below) which will be emailed upon registration.  In addition, there will be homework between classes in order to keep up with the lessons.

    Prerequisites:
Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit and purl and follow a pattern.  If you have questions about your skills, please ask for assistance in the shop or by phone.

    Homework:
Prior to the 1st class you will need to purchase your bulky-weight yarn and wind at least one skein.  Homework before the first class is a gauge swatch knit in the round (see video).  Instructions will be sent out before the start of class. In addition, you should expect homework between each class.

    Included:
Eight hours of instruction, pattern, stitch markers, Mother of Purl project bag, informational handouts and links

    Additional Info:
You will need to choose and purchase a bulky-weight yarn of your choice in the right quantity for your size. Yarn is not included.
Needles are not included, so please bring with you to the first class:  US 10, 16" circulars.  Once we determine your gauge, you will need additional needles to complete the sweater.
